The Brief
This typeface development project focused on designing a decorative display typeface for a retro-inspired children’s clothing brand ‘Sandy Cheeks’ which captures the playful and nostalgic vibe of the 1970s. The aim was to develop a typeface with a high contrast between thick and thin strokes, complemented by whimsical curves. The typeface needed to convey a sense of retro fun while being bold enough to stand out in various branding and marketing materials.
The Why
The inspiration for "Kindly Retro" came from a desire to bring the bold, expressive aesthetics of the 1970s into contemporary design. The 1970s were known for their distinctive and playful visual language, which continues to evoke a sense of freedom, creativity, and fun. The typeface bridges nostalgia and modern design, offering versatility and personality for a brand looking to stand out in a crowded market.

The Outcome
The typeface includes a complete alphabet in uppercase and essential special characters, making it versatile for various applications. From tags and stickers to signage and digital media, "Kindly Retro" provides a bold, eye-catching, nostalgic and fresh presence.
The typeface has worked exceptionally well for the Sandy Cheeks brand. It resonates with retro and vintage enthusiasts while also providing the brand with a fun and unique identity. It successfully enhances the brand's visual appeal and helps it stand out in a crowded market.
