The Brief
The "Octopus for a Preemie" project was completed during an internship at Liveworm, in collaboration with Griffith University, for the real-life client, ‘Octopus for a Preemie Tasmania.’ This initiative provides crocheted octopus teddies to premature babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) across Australia, offering comfort by giving the infants something to hold, reminiscent of the umbilical cord. The brief required the creation of a logo and visual identity that would appeal to both healthcare professionals and the parents of premature babies, with a focus on warmth, comfort, and care.
The Why
The motivation behind this project was rooted in the mission of "Octopus for a Preemie" to provide comfort and security to vulnerable infants. Premature babies face many challenges, and these handmade octopuses can offer a soothing presence that helps reduce stress and anxiety. The branding needed to embody this mission, conveying a sense of calmness, love, and universal care. Design choices such as a gender-neutral colour palette and a simple, friendly octopus illustration were made to ensure inclusivity and to make the branding universally appealing and heartwarming.
Development & Process
The Outcome
The project resulted in a branding style guide that captured the essence of "Octopus for a Preemie." The logo featured a soft, welcoming octopus with a gentle, inclusive colour scheme. Branding materials, including business cards, were designed to be bright yet comforting, ensuring they were eye-catching and conveyed safety. Positive feedback confirmed that the design effectively communicated the initiative's values. This project enhanced my skills in Adobe Illustrator and reinforced the importance of thoughtful design in meaningful causes.
